In Canvas Studio, a Spot Light emits a focused cone of light that starts at the lamp’s position and narrows toward a target point: perfect for headlights, stage lamps, flashlights, or any shot that needs a dramatic pool of illumination. Besides the usual color and brightness controls, you can dial in cone width, fall-off, and shadow quality; and in the backend you can even assign a texture map (often called a gobo) so the beam projects patterns like window slats or logo stencils.
color – sets the hue of the beam; tint it warm for tungsten, cool for moonlight, or any custom accent color.
intensity – overall brightness multiplier; higher values punch through strong ambient light, lower values create subtle accents.
distance – maximum range before the beam fades to black; leave at 0 for an infinite throw.
angle – half-angle (in radians) of the light cone; small numbers make a tight spotlight, larger numbers widen the pool.
penumbra – soft-edge percentage of the cone; 0 gives a crisp cutoff, 1 produces a fully feathered fall-off.
decay – how quickly intensity drops with distance; 2 approximates real-world inverse-square fall-off, higher values darken faster.
helper – toggles a wireframe gizmo in the viewport so you can see and aim the cone easily during layout.
castShadow – enables shadow maps for this light; turn on only when needed to save GPU time.
position – XYZ coordinates of the light source; move it like any object to aim or rig overhead.
focus – sharpens or softens the shadow edges; larger numbers tighten detail.
bias – small offset to reduce “shadow acne” on lit surfaces.
normalBias – extra push along surface normals to fight self-shadowing artifacts on steep angles.
mapSize (width / height) – resolution of the shadow texture or chosen image texture; higher values give crisper shadows at the cost of memory.
camera (near / far) – limits of the shadow camera frustum; keep the range tight around the lit area for best quality.
With a texture map assigned in the backend, the Spot Light projects that image through the cone, letting you cast patterned gobos, leafy caustics, or branded graphics onto any surface. Combine the texture feature with angle, penumbra, and high-resolution shadows to craft everything from theatrical stage lighting to realistic sunlight through blinds; all while keeping precise control over performance and visual impact.
